Don't Be Taken By Surprise
1 Thessalonians 5:4

Hurricane Frances in 1999

AUDIO: Listen to the audio version of this post HERE. (NOT YET UPLOADED)

1 Thessalonians 5:4 (GW)
4  But, brothers and sisters, you don't live in the dark. That day won't take you by surprise as a thief would.

Newsflash: There is a hurricane ravaging the Carribean RIGHT NOW (as of the moment of the writing of this post)!  Of course, for most of my readers, this "newsflash" comes as no surprise.  We have heard on the news of how Hurricane Irma, the strongest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, has been bearing down on the North Carribean and is enroute for the U.S. coast of Florida.

Scientists have projected the path of the monster storm and the residents of the areas within the projected path have been given some time to prepare.

Store shelves have been emptied:

Windows have been boarded:

Sandbags have been laid:

Yet, there are others who were or still will be unprepared for this massive storm:

This reminds me of the impending return of our Lord Jesus Christ.  His return has been foretold (forecast).  Though the Bible says,

Mark 13:32 (NAS-1977)
32  But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

The responsibility of preparation for His coming has been left to us.  The "signs of the times" are seen in the heavens and in the earth, in the physical realm of humanity as well as in the spiritual realm.  If we are blind to the impeding event of His coming, it is because we have not been reading the "News" (Bible).

In making necessary preparations, we should be soaking up our spiritual food, God's Word, so that our "shelves of sin" will be sparse and barren:

Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)
1  ...let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,...

Additionally, we should be putting on the full armor of God

Ephesians 6:13 (NIV)
13  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Full armor of God

As part of that stand, we should be asking the Lord to provide His "hedge of protection" against the temptations and schemes of the enemy, who would TRY to pluck us from God's hand (click here for an excellent related article entitled, "What is a Hedge of Protection?", found on GotQuestions.org):

Psalm 139:5 - God's Hedge of Protection

As you "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling..." (Phillippians 2:12 -- click here for another excellent related article by GotQuestions.org), you should then focus on making every effort to warn the others who have not yet prepared themselves for Christ's return (Matthew 24:38-39).

Watching for the Lord's return

When the Lord returns in the clouds, Don't be taken by surprise!
